**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new phase felt like diving into uncharted waters. Now, as I reflect on an academic year marked by growth, challenges, and a great deal of fun, I can’t help but consider the lessons I’ve absorbed and the distance I’ve traveled.

### Overcoming the Apprehension of Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating elements of entering university was the thought of making new friends. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my initial day at my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire time isolated in my room, too shy to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m excited to say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These bonds didn’t happen instantly, but rather unfolded through small gestures—like engaging in light conversations with others who were feeling just as anxious. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial. My key takeaway? Take the risk of connecting early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, remain authentic. With such a varied group of individuals within the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

### Confronting the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and intensity was another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was a significant transition, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more substantial. It can be overwhelming and lead to self-doubt when witnessing others succeed in their studies. However, I found solace in understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are experiencing the same struggles.

The secret to overcoming this? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most crucial lesson I gleaned during my first year. Whether it’s asking your classmates or reaching out to faculty, always feel free to pose questions.

### Support from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is absolutely fantastic. The lecturers and tutors sincerely care about the success of their students and are well aware of the hurdles we encounter. They frequently check in with us throughout the year, providing support and addressing our questions.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral care available until later in the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I made the bold choice to become a well-being representative for my year. This involvement helped me establish connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities. My main takeaway is: don’t shy away from utilizing the support systems in place—they exist for a purpose, and you can never receive too much guidance.

### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even during my time here—was largely unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I came to realize I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and enjoyment, leading to significant personal growth along the way.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. But also understand that with time, perseverance, and the appropriate support, you’ll find your place and fully enjoy this life-changing experience.
