**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, uncertainty, and second-guessing regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. In hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and how do I assess my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was the process of making friends. If you’re a future student, this might be a significant worry for you as well. On my initial day in student accommodation, just before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had.

Imperial has become my second home, and the key was engaging in small talk with those who were experiencing the same feelings as I was. My main takeaway? Step out of your comfort zone early. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new individuals. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is teeming with diverse individuals, and you’re likely to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adapting to the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the coursework and heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was quite apparent, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It can be tempting to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others study with assurance.

What aided me in pushing through was the understanding that everyone is going through similar experiences. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, it’s probable others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to reach out for help—whether it’s from your classmates or instructors. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting aspects of my journey has been the tremendous assistance from the teaching staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and recognize the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not utilizing it sooner. Taking that step made a considerable difference. Early on, I chose to become a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to engage more closely with staff members. This experience highlighted the importance of nurturing relationships with lecturers and support staff. There are countless avenues to interact with them, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My piece of advice? Fully utilize the available support—there’s never such a thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on my first year at Imperial, I’ve come to realize that the fears and anxieties I held prior to entering university were mostly unfounded. With adequate support from staff and peers, those concerns became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m not truly alone and that it’s entirely possible to enjoy university life while juggling academic challenges like exams and deadlines.

For anyone preparing to begin their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: welcome the challenges, seek assistance when necessary, and allow yourself to evolve. The experience is shaped by your approach, and with a positive mindset, it can be one of the most fulfilling periods of your life.
