**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt regarding the path that lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new adventure felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, trials, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So what insights did this year provide me, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Apprehension of Forming Friendships
One of the greatest anxieties I encountered was the challenge of making friends. The onset of university can indeed be daunting, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it might be among your primary concerns as well. On my first day in my accommodation, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, far too anxious to venture out and make introductions.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like family to me. All it required was initiating some casual conversation with others who were in a similar situation.
So, what was my key takeaway? Taking a brave step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you are not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker functions and chances to engage with others. Above all, just remain true to yourself. With such a heterogeneous community of students, you’re sure to encounter people who reflect your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was adapting to the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was distinctly noticeable, and the shift from the first term to the second proved to be even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and perceive them to be ahead.
What enabled me to navigate this was the acknowledgment that we are all in this together. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same. The pivotal point is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is probably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Supportive Faculty
Speaking of help, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want their students to thrive and are acutely aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and demonstrated understanding towards our challenges.
I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the year’s end, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s outset, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are ample ways to bond with faculty, and doing so can tremendously enhance your university experience. My primary lesson here? Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve realized that the feelings of anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were often unwarranted. A plethora of support exists, from staff to fellow students, to aid you in navigating the challenges. I’ve discovered that I am never truly isolated, and I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
This year has been one of development, perseverance, and connections. To anyone preparing to begin their university adventure: take that leap, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
