**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was ready to commence my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was quite intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been transformative—marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just before the term kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The crucial element was taking that initial step—striking up casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same situation. Over time, those interactions flourished into significant friendships, and I genuinely feel I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Be bold early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with fellow students. And above all, be authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second term proved to be even more arduous. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills when witnessing others apparently excelling.
What aided me in this journey was the awareness that I was not alone—everyone was grappling with similar issues. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely others are in the same boat. The best course of action is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from your peers or the academic staff, reaching out for help is imperative. In fact, mastering the art of asking for help may be one of the most vital skills you cultivate in your inaugural year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and show compassion toward the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering advice.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had started using those resources sooner. Early in the year, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with faculty members. This experience turned out to be invaluable, as it provided me with greater insight into the resources at my disposal and ways to navigate difficulties. My recommendation? Seize the chance to utilize the support available—it’s designed to help you flourish.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to beginning university and throughout the year—were unfounded. With the abundance of support accessible from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has instructed me on how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines along with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, university is a journey of development, and while it may appear daunting at the outset, it offers a chance to uncover your strengths and forge enduring connections.
