**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the path that lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been shy and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was quite outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time brimming with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what exactly have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely this concerns you as well. I must confess that on my first day moving into my residence—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with taking small steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally anxious.
So, what has become clear to me? First, take that bold step early in the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to bond with others. Second, simply be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was the adjustment to the increased workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt especially daunting. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to question your capabilities as you observe others studying and worry you’re falling behind.
What significantly aided me was the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial action is to seek help—whether it be from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for assistance is arguably one of the most vital skills you can develop in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and are understanding of the hurdles students encounter. They maintain open channels of communication throughout the year to resolve any challenges we might face.
I must admit, I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Early on, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with the staff, which proved to be exceptionally beneficial. Whether through formal responsibilities or informal interactions, building relationships with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best investments you can make for yourself.
My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the support networks available to you. Whether it’s academic advice, mental health support, or just having someone to talk to, there’s no such thing as too much assistance.
### Reflections on What I’ve Learned
Looking back, this year has illuminated that the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support provided by faculty and peers, there’s always a pathway to tackle challenges.
Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never truly on my own. Even amidst the pressures of examinations and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to find joy and maximize this experience.
To anyone gearing up to commence their university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’ll evolve in ways you never thought possible.
