**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences, I can assert that it has been transformative. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

Among the most daunting aspects of starting university was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely one of your biggest sources of anxiety as well. On my first day in student housing, merely a few days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Now, looking at my current situation, I’m proud to say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become my second family here at Imperial. All it required was some light conversation with individuals who were equally as anxious as I was.

So, what have I learned? The crucial step is to take that initial leap early on. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter people who share your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the workload and complexity of university-level material posed another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same situation. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from classmates or faculty members, seeking assistance is indispensable.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always eager to address our queries.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I’d taken advantage of it sooner. At the onset of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This turned out to be one of the most gratifying facets of my university journey.

There are countless means to engage with staff, and I highly recommend capitalizing on these opportunities. Whether it’s through formal positions or informal chats, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can lead to a significant difference. My key takeaway here is to embrace the assistance available—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I experienced prior to and during university were unfounded. With the extensive support obtainable from both staff and peers, I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Thus, to anyone on the verge of commencing their university journey: take those leaps, seek help, and don’t shy away from being yourself. The challenges may appear formidable at first, but they are all integral to an enlightening experience that will facilitate growth in ways you never thought possible.
