**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in a swirl of nerves, trepidation, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging headfirst into this new adventure felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I cannot help but think about what I’ve learned and how much I’ve evolved.
### Conquering the Friend-Making Challenge
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may feel similarly. I certainly had those feelings. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assure you that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships of my life. These relationships have turned into a second family for me, both within my course and beyond the university.
So, what shifted? I came to understand that taking that initial step—no matter how intimidating—was truly worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared at the outset, that’s okay. Institutions like Imperial provide numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. My main takeaway? Stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another challenge I encountered was adapting to the demands and complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when surrounded by high-achieving individuals. But here’s what aided me: reminding myself that everyone is navigating a similar journey.
If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are experiencing the same struggle. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—be it from your peers or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is among the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors genuinely desire for their students to thrive, and they recognize the challenges we encounter. They are approachable, understanding, and maintain open lines of communication all year round.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support accessible to me until the end of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. Early on, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster relationships with staff members. This experience taught me the importance of connecting with those who are there to support you. Whether through formal roles or informal conversations, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can have a significant impact. My suggestion? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much of it.
### Insights Gained
Upon reflection, this year has imparted so many lessons. I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the backing of staff and peers, those feelings became manageable. I’ve recognized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and excitement.
Beginning university is a leap into the unknown, yet it’s also an extraordinary chance for personal growth. If you’re about to embark on this journey, embrace the experience. Be authentic, seek assistance when necessary, and take those leaps—you won’t regret it.
