### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been timid and withdrawn, stepping into the unfamiliar seemed like an intimidating challenge. Upon reflection, I now recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment. So, what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered at the university’s onset was forging friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, it’s likely a concern you share as well. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the term’s start, I spent all day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself to others.

Now, looking back, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I have ever known. My fellow students and colleagues have transformed into a second family for me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain.

What did this teach me? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is invaluable. If you’re not immediately ready or comfortable, no need to fret—there will be a wealth of icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a variety of individuals at university, you’re likely to discover those who share your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was quite substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more overwhelming. It wasn’t always simple to maintain confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling inadequate in my contribution.

What assisted me during this time was the reminder that everyone was navigating similar struggles. If I was confused about something, chances are others were too. The essential lesson here was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This may be the most vital takeaway from my first year: never hesitate to ask for support.

#### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely want us to excel and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept communication lines open and offered numerous resources for our success.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral assistance available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I made the bold move of becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me form meaningful relationships with the faculty. This experience was invaluable as it fostered a sense of connection and support. Whether through formal titles or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best strategies for self-advocacy at university.

What’s the main lesson here? Take full advantage of the support available to you. There’s truly no such thing as excessive assistance.

#### Insights Gained

As I look back on my first year, I recognize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. With the support readily available from both faculty and peers, I was never completely isolated. This year has imparted lessons on balancing the stress of exams and deadlines with uplifting moments of enjoyment.

As I gaze towards the future, I feel a renewed sense of confidence and anticipation for what lies ahead. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember: take the leap, seek assistance, and remain true to yourself. You’ve got this!
