**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, stepping into this new adventure felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the start was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be on your mind as well. On my first day in student housing, just before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to go outside and introduce myself. However, I can now confidently say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life—individuals who feel like family to me.

What did I discover? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be plenty of social events and chances to connect with others who are in the same situation. Above all, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a varied student community, you’re likely to encounter people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adapting to the course’s workload and complexity. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more demanding. At times, witnessing others study left me questioning my own capabilities.

What aided me during this time? Reminding myself that I wasn’t solitary in my struggles. If I found a concept difficult, it was likely that others did as well. The most invaluable lesson was to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Requesting help is not an indication of weakness but rather an essential aspect of the learning process.

### The Significance of Connecting with Faculty

A key component of my first year was the exceptional guidance provided by the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about the success and well-being of students, frequently checking in and addressing any issues. Although I didn’t fully engage with pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

In the beginning, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This role facilitated connections with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously helpful. There are numerous opportunities to interact with staff, and taking advantage of these can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest lesson? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Final Thoughts

Upon reflection, this year has taught me that the anxieties I experienced before and during university were often unwarranted. With the appropriate backing from faculty and fellow students, challenges can be overcome. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly isolated and that achieving a balance between academic challenges and a fulfilling university life is absolutely possible.

If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, welcome the opportunities that lie ahead. Take that first step, seek help when necessary, and above all, stay true to yourself.
