**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in a mix of anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I set out to embark on my first year of studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial. Having always considered myself shy and introverted, entering this new phase felt quite daunting. Reflecting now, I see a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the foremost challenges I encountered early on was the task of making connections. If you’re an incoming student, this is likely something on your mind as well. I distinctly remember my first day at the student residence—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself that I spent the entire day isolated in my room. Yet, here I am today, able to state confidently that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever known.
What’s the main takeaway? Take that plunge. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to interact with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to meet individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Coping with Academic Rigors
Another significant challenge was getting acclimated to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more formidable. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with assurance.
What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are you’re not alone. The best action you can take is to seek help—be it from classmates or educators. Asking for assistance is not a weakness; it’s an essential skill that will facilitate your success.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most beneficial elements of my initial year was the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They sincerely wish for students to succeed and are consistently prepared to assist. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
I didn’t truly leverage the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, and I regret not doing so sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative, enabling me to foster connections with staff members. Familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and support staff can be enormously advantageous, and I strongly encourage taking full advantage of the assistance offered.
### Key Insights from My First Year
Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that a lot of the anxieties I had prior to starting university were unwarranted. Support is always within reach, whether from staff or peers. I’ve discovered that I’m never isolated in my challenges and that it’s feasible to juggle academic demands while enjoying a fulfilling university experience.
For those about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, reach out for help when necessary, and seize the opportunities that present themselves. University is a period of growth, and with the right attitude, it can be an extraordinarily enriching experience.
