**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, plunging into the depths of university life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and abundant joy, I recognize the extent of my learning and progress.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a prospective student, this might be a source of concern for you as well. I recall my first day of moving into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the term starting. I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and in wider circles. What was the game changer? Taking that first step to engage in casual conversation with those who were experiencing similar feelings.

One crucial lesson I’ve taken away is this: be authentic. With the wide array of individuals across the university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with your passions and principles. And if you’re not prepared to jump right in, worry not—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others throughout the academic year.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and challenges was another considerable obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university studies was a clear escalation, and the leap from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing peers seemingly flourishing.

What assisted me the most was the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. This is perhaps the most invaluable lesson I internalized during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They have a genuine desire for students to thrive and show understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they fostered open lines of communication, addressing our issues and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it ultimately became one of the most fulfilling choices I made. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which were immensely beneficial.

There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty and access their resources, and I can’t emphasize enough how vital it is to leverage these opportunities. You can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and during my initial term—was largely misplaced. With the abundant support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

I’ve learned how to navigate stress from exams and deadlines while also prioritizing moments of joy and self-care. Most importantly, I’ve recognized that embracing risks, whether in forming friendships or seeking support, can lead to remarkable growth and satisfaction.

As I progress, I am eager to discover what the next phase of university life has in store.
