**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and quiet, diving into new experiences wasn’t something I was familiar with. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what exactly have I discovered, and where am I today?
### Forming Connections: The Primary Challenge
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was building friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.
What did I take away from this experience? I discovered that taking that first step is essential. Even when you feel unprepared or uncomfortable, there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with people in similar circumstances. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is vital. With the diversity of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Academic Struggles: The Shift in Workload
Another obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a clear transition from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
One of the critical realizations that aided me through this was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are that others are struggling too. The best advice I can impart is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to ask for help early in the year is vital for both enduring and excelling in your first year.
### Assistance from the Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely aim for your success and are acutely aware of the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to resolve any concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had sought it out sooner.
At the year’s outset, I made a bold decision to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form stronger connections with the staff, which was incredibly beneficial. There are ample opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt, both prior to and during university, was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support offered by staff and fellow students, I realized I was never isolated. I’ve learned how to balance having fun with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines, and I’m eager to continue my growth in the years ahead.
