**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I got ready to embark on my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, the thought of immersing myself in university life felt overwhelming. Now, as I contemplate the past academic year, I recognize a journey characterized by personal development, obstacles, and innumerable joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was making friends. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary worries about beginning university—and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my interests and stand by me through everything. The crucial element? Taking that first leap of faith. Even if you feel reluctant or uneasy at the start, there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to engage with fellow students.

The most significant lesson I learned is to truly be yourself. With such a wide variety of individuals at university, you’re bound to find those who connect with you. A bit of casual conversation with someone in a similar position can significantly help in forging meaningful friendships.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was acclimating to the heightened workload and the intricacies of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and moving from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What enabled me to manage this was realizing that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital skill I cultivated during my first year was learning to ask for assistance. Whether it’s reaching out to fellow students or seeking advice from faculty, asking for help can make a significant difference.

### Aid from the Materials Department

On the topic of staff, one of the highlights of my first year has been the remarkable assistance from the Materials department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

I didn’t take full advantage of the support services available until the year was coming to a close, but I wish I had utilized them earlier. Accepting the role of year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of the best choices I made. It facilitated the creation of connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. The support exists for a reason—don’t hesitate to utilize it!

### Essential Insights

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the plethora of support options available from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve discovered the value of embracing challenges, seeking help when necessary, and finding joy even in the face of exam pressures and deadlines.

University life is a journey of personal growth, and while it may sometimes feel daunting, it’s also immensely fulfilling. If you’re about to venture into this new chapter, remember to take that leap of faith, remain true to yourself, and make the most of the resources surrounding you.
