**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping straight into university life was quite foreign to me. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and loads of enjoyable experiences! But what exactly has this year revealed to me, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was the quest to make friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably one of your biggest concerns as well. On my moving-in day, just days prior to the start of term, I found myself spending the whole day enclosed in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both in my program and throughout the university. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a handful of straightforward conversations with others who were feeling similarly.

So, what lesson did I take away? I realized that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreakers and events structured to facilitate connections with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is paramount. With such a diverse group of individuals within the program and university, you are sure to encounter those who share your vibes.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was sharp, and the leap from the first term to the second was even steeper. Being immersed in such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and start to question your capabilities.

What assisted me in navigating those moments of self-doubt was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear, it’s likely that others find it perplexing as well. The most crucial lesson I gathered during my first year? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or the faculty, reaching out is vital.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the team in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintain consistent communication regarding any concerns we may be facing. While I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing it sooner.

At the year’s outset, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and establishing those connections can greatly enrich your university experience. My greatest insight from this aspect of university life is to fully embrace the support available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has taught me that much of the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to find joy, even in the midst of exam pressures and deadlines.
