### Contemplating My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was preparing to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and shy, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on my inaugural academic year, I recognize it as a period marked by significant personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my position today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is often a primary worry when beginning university, and I was certainly no outlier. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term’s formal commencement, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here have transformed into a second family for me.

What aided me in overcoming this barrier? It initiated with casual conversations. I recognized that everyone else was equally nervous and eager to engage. My main lesson? Take that bold step early on. If you’re not prepared initially, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, simply be yourself. With such a rich tapestry of cultures at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was distinct, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your skills when among high-achieving classmates. Nonetheless, I grasped a vital lesson: everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re finding it hard to grasp something, it’s likely that others are experiencing similar struggles. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether it be from your classmates or the teaching staff.

### The Significance of Community and Support

On the topic of staff, I must stress how incredibly supportive the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in student success and understand the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always ready to assist. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had sought help sooner.

Embracing the role of a year wellness representative was another step I took at the year’s outset. This opportunity enabled me to forge connections with staff, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting familiar with the staff is among the most beneficial actions you can undertake for yourself. My suggestion? Leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was frequently baseless. With abundant support from staff and peers, I understood that I was never genuinely alone. This year has educated me on how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with joyful moments. Most importantly, it has highlighted the importance of stepping beyond my comfort zone and seizing the opportunities presented to me.
