**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nervousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and shy, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can recognize how much I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. Moving into my accommodation a few days prior to the start of term, I spent an entire day retreating in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment came when I resolved to break free from my comfort zone and initiate brief conversations with individuals who were also in the same situation as me. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into friendships that feel like a second family. My main takeaway? Take that plunge at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. And most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial is populated by diverse individuals, and you are sure to discover those who resonate with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the workload and complexity of university-level material was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more taxing. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when in the company of high-achieving peers.
What assisted me in managing this was the understanding that everyone shares similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp something, others are likely experiencing the same difficulties. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to solicit support is perhaps the most vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
In terms of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely aspire for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took early on, and it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, getting to know the staff is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My suggestion? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was often unfounded. With the wealth of support from faculty and fellow students, I realized I was never truly alone. I’ve discovered how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I recognize a year of personal development, resilience, and unforgettable experiences. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, be aware that although the challenges may appear daunting, they also present opportunities for growth. Take the leap, seek help, and embrace the experience—you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
