**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been rather introverted, plunging into such a significant life transition felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on the preceding academic year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what have I gained from this experience, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my initial day at student accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to fellow students. Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was a little small talk with others who shared my nervousness.
So, what has this taught me? I learned that taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there will be ample icebreakers and events designed to help foster connections. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals at the university, you are bound to encounter others who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the intricacies of the material. The leap from A-levels was quite significant, and the shift from the first to the second semester proved to be even more arduous. It’s easy to feel inundated and question your capabilities when observing others studying. However, the truth is that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are others are experiencing the same challenges. The most vital lesson I internalized during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Don’t hesitate to reach out to either peers or staff.
### The Value of Staff Support
Speaking of staff, I cannot stress enough how encouraging the Materials department is. The lecturers and tutors truly want students to thrive, and they are well aware of the challenges we encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we might have. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a decisive step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to establish connections with the staff, which has proven to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to foster relationships with faculty, and this is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My key takeaway is to leverage the support that is available to you. It’s impossible to have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was largely unneeded. There are numerous support systems in place, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that you are never truly alone. I’ve discovered how to manage the pressures from exams and deadlines while also enjoying my university experience.
Looking back, I take pride in the advancements I’ve made, and I eagerly anticipate what the next few years have to offer.
