**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and many enjoyable experiences. So, what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

Making new friends was one of the most intimidating challenges I encountered. For many new students, this is often the aspect that induces the most anxiety about starting university, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others.

Now, as I reflect on my journey, I can proudly say that I have formed some of the most valuable friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have become like a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the campus. All it required was to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in small conversations with those who were experiencing similar uncertainties.

What did I take away from this experience? I realized that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you feel unprepared or uneasy right away, don’t worry—there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse student body at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing Academic Challenges

Another significant obstacle was adapting to the demands and complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, especially when observing peers who seem to be thriving academically.

What facilitated my journey through these feelings was the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Developing the ability to reach out for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

Speaking of seeking help, the faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They are sincerely invested in the success of students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always ready to address our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Accepting the position of a well-being representative for the year was one of the significant steps I took at the start. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the extensive range of support provided by both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has imparted lessons on how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a period of personal growth, learning, and connection, and I’m eager to discover what the future has in store.
