**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I am compelled to contemplate the lessons I’ve gathered and the progress I’ve made.

### Taking the Leap: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the beginning of my university journey was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this concern is likely a major one, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just days ahead of the start of term, I spent a full day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself to anyone.

Looking at it from today’s perspective, I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. The pivotal moment came when I made the choice to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was.

What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first step is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to bond with peers. Most importantly, I discovered that being true to yourself is the best strategy. With the rich diversity at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Academic Challenges: Adjusting to the Workload
Another key challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the intricacies of the academic material. The shift from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more distinct. It wasn’t consistently easy to maintain confidence, particularly when I observed others studying and felt like I wasn’t up to par.

What aided me in overcoming this was the awareness that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was navigating similar struggles, and if I was puzzled by something, there was a good chance that others were as well. The essential lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking help. Whether from classmates or teaching staff, reaching out for assistance can be transformative.

### Supportive Staff: An Invaluable Resource
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely wish for students to succeed and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept us in the loop, addressing our worries and offering direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing it sooner. Accepting the role of year well-being representative was one of the early leaps I made, and it transformed into a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enrich your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support provided—you can always benefit from assistance!

### Key Lessons from My First Year
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and at times during the year—was often unfounded. With a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve grasped how to balance the stress from examinations and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

In the end, my first year in Materials Science and Engineering has been a voyage of growth, perseverance, and exploration. If you’re on the verge of starting your own university journey, remember to take that leap, confront the challenges, and fully utilize the support surrounding you. You’ve got this!
