**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I started a journey that was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Beginning my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman felt like jumping into the deep end—something my formerly timid and reserved self wasn’t used to. Reflecting now, I see an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and abundant happiness. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing the same fears. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.
What shifted? I took small, manageable steps, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. I learned that taking a bold step early on is crucial. If you’re not prepared or at ease at first, that’s okay—there are countless icebreaker activities and chances to interact with others. Above all, I found that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to meet individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and rigor was yet another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or to doubt your skills when you’re surrounded by high-achieving peers. However, one thing that aided me was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance that others are too.
The key takeaway for me? Don’t shy away from requesting assistance. Whether it’s from your fellow students or the teaching faculty, seeking help is essential. Cooperation and communication are incredibly valuable strategies for navigating the trials of the first year.
### The Significance of Community and Support
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They truly desire for students to excel and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing direction. While I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier.
Taking on the role of well-being representative for my year was another leap I took at the start of the year. This role enabled me to build connections with staff members, which turned out to be an incredibly enriching experience. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly impact your experience. My greatest insight? Make the most of the resources and support that are available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unnecessary. With the vast support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fulfillment.
Ultimately, university is a journey of personal development, and although challenges are unavoidable, so are the chances to conquer them and flourish.
