**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was infused with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has consistently been quiet and introverted, plunging into such a significant transition felt like an enormous challenge. Now, as I look back on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I am in awe of the knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve achieved.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was the idea of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my initial day in student accommodation, just a few days before the term officially started, I spent the whole day confined in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment was when I chose to step outside my comfort zone and initiate small conversations with others who, like me, were navigating this new and unfamiliar setting. Gradually, these interactions grew into significant friendships, and I now feel as though I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial.
What have I gleaned from this experience? First, taking that crucial leap of faith at the beginning of the year is essential. Even if you don’t think you’re prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Second, the most valuable thing you can do is to be authentic. With such a vibrant community of students at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another major challenge was adapting to the volume of work and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more taxing. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and ponder whether you’re keeping pace.
What aided me during those moments of uncertainty was the recognition that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with understanding some content, it’s likely that others are as well. The secret is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is perhaps the most vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open, addressing our worries and providing support.
Despite not fully utilizing the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, allowing me to cultivate relationships with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, it has taught me that the apprehension I felt—both before embarking on university and throughout the year—was largely misplaced. With a broad array of support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve discovered how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and self-care.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It’s highlighted the importance of stepping beyond my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and seizing the opportunities that arise. For anyone about to embark on a similar path, understand that while the journey ahead may appear intimidating, it is also brimming with growth, connection, and countless fulfilling experiences.
