**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainties about the future. I was set to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and hesitant, stepping into the unfamiliar felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

A considerable source of anxiety at the onset of university was the fear of cultivating friendships. For countless prospective students, this presents a significant worry, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days preceding the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others.

Now, looking back, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the wider university—have come to feel like a second family to me. It merely required stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others in a similar situation.

So, what have I gleaned from this experience? Taking that initial courageous step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable right off the bat, that’s perfectly fine—there are abundant icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Above all, simply be authentic. With such a rich and varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Another notable challenge was acclimating to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished classmates.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are, too. The essential lesson is to reach out for help—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Developing the skill to seek assistance is arguably the most crucial ability to cultivate during your initial year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

A highlight of my experience has been the remarkable support provided by the Materials department staff. They are genuinely invested in ensuring students thrive and demonstrate understanding for the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.

While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Accepting the role of a well-being representative was a bold move I made at the beginning, and it turned out to be one of the best choices I made. This role enabled me to form connections with staff members, which has been invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Capitalize on the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back over my first year, I’ve recognized that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never entirely alone. This year has imparted lessons on how to balance exam stress and deadlines with instances of joy and enjoyment.

As I progress, I am thankful for the growth I have undergone and the friendships I have created. To anyone gearing up to commence their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take those bold steps, and remember that help is always nearby.
