**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was certainly not something my introverted and quiet personality was used to. Now, as I reflect on a year of education filled with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I can state with certainty that it’s been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and how do I perceive my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the start was forming friendships. For numerous new students, this represents one of the most anxiety-inducing parts of entering university. I recall spending my initial day in student housing confined to my room, too daunted by the prospect of venturing out and meeting others. Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to say I’ve formed some of the best bonds I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family.
What led me to this point? It all began with small actions, such as engaging in light conversations with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was. I discovered that taking an initial bold step, even if it feels awkward, can foster remarkable relationships. And if you’re not prepared immediately, there’s no need to fret—numerous icebreaker functions and chances to socialize exist throughout the academic year. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more formidable. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What helped me during these bouts of self-doubt was recognizing that I wasn’t alone. Everyone faced similar struggles, and if I found something difficult to grasp, chances were that others were battling it as well. The most important lesson I gleaned was to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. Requesting support is not a marker of weakness; it’s an essential skill that will benefit you throughout your time at university and beyond.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
The faculty within the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and exhibit understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open communication and provided consistent encouragement.
Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the early initiatives I embraced this year. This position enabled me to forge relationships with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous avenues for connecting with staff, and I strongly encourage seizing these opportunities. Whether you require academic advice or personal support, the resources offered are aimed at facilitating a smoother university experience.
### Key Insights from My First Year
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even during the year—was often misplaced. Given the extensive support systems available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and leisure.
For anyone gearing up to commence their own university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap into the unknown, seek assistance when necessary, and embrace your authentic self. You’ll be astonished by how much growth you can achieve in just one year.
