**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was intimidating. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a time of development, challenges, and abundant happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I at this moment?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

The most daunting challenge I confronted was forming friendships. This is often a major concern for many incoming students—and it certainly was for me. On my initial day in student housing, merely days before classes commenced, I found myself spending the whole day in my room, too anxious to go out and meet people.

Now, looking back, I can proudly say that I have formed some of the most wonderful friendships I could have hoped for. At Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with brief interactions with peers who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I glean from this experience? Taking that first brave step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not yet ready or feel uneasy, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and avenues to help foster connections with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing Academic Challenges

Another major obstacle was acclimatizing to the course load and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more profound. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities, particularly when observing peers who seem to be thriving.

What aided me was the awareness that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find it difficult to grasp a concept, likely, many others are too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from colleagues or faculty. This is arguably the most vital lesson I absorbed throughout my first year: don’t shy away from asking for help.

### Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly desire for students to thrive and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our issues and providing valuable advice.

I didn’t fully utilize the supportive services available until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the risks I embraced at the beginning of the year. This experience enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual chats, getting to know the staff is one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself. My key takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources that are at your disposal—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. There are countless systems of support in place, from staff to fellow students, ensuring you’re never truly on your own. This year has taught me how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of joy and excitement.

Ultimately, university is a path of development, and every impediment serves as a chance to learn. If you are about to embark on your own journey, remember to take that plunge, welcome the support surrounding you, and relish the experience.
