**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. As a first-year student, I was about to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved personality was used to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a journey rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Building Friendships: Surmounting the Initial Challenge
One of the biggest sources of anxiety I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely one of your primary concerns too. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at Imperial, particularly within my program. I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what did I discover? I found out that making that initial effort at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Most significantly, I learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.
### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another notable challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and start to doubt your own capabilities.
What aided me in persevering was the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most vital lesson to internalize in your first year—don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!
### The Value of Staff Support
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is truly remarkable. They sincerely wish for your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They empathize with us and keep lines of communication open throughout the year to address any concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a representative for well-being in my year. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to establish connections with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway from this experience is to make the most of the support that’s available to you—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. With a vast array of support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings of doubt can be diminished. I’ve come to realize that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to find joy even amid the pressures of examinations and deadlines.
