**Residing in London: Nine Months of Experiences**
*By Harsh Gupta, MSc. Advanced Materials Science and Engineering*
Approximately nine months ago, I began my adventure of residing in London. Although this duration might not appear extensive, it has been sufficient to acquire significant experiences regarding life in this lively and diverse metropolis. London is recognized not just for its extensive history and culture but also for its myriad accommodation choices and flourishing communities. For students, the city provides a wealth of options, ranging from student residences to private lodgings, including ensuite rooms, shared accommodations, studio flats, and house shares.
For domestic students, scheduling apartment viewings is relatively simple, while international students can utilize platforms like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom to investigate housing options online. These platforms offer information about amenities and closeness to public transportation, facilitating better planning.
### Securing a Place to Call Home
When I initiated my search for housing, my primary focus was on finding a room in Central London. Being near major attractions, social venues, and the campus of Imperial College was crucial for me. London is organized into six concentric zones, with zones one and two being the most central. The city’s outstanding public transport system, comprising the Underground (tube), buses, and trains, allows for easy travel between zones.
To minimize travel expenses—since inter-zonal travel could amount to £5.25 each day—I chose to walk short distances rather than depend on public transport. For longer distances, the Oyster card provides reduced travel fares, making it an economical option for students. Moreover, the London Overground and National Rail services reach beyond the Underground network, linking outer zones to the city center. Nevertheless, fares for these services fluctuate based on distance and the pricing structure of the train operator.
Residing in Central London brings its advantages but also high living expenses. To manage costs, I opted to share a room with a friend, which greatly lowered our rent. I also selected intercollegiate student accommodations, as they offered a chance to connect with peers from various backgrounds and similar ages—something more challenging to accomplish with private rentals.
### Accessibility to Essentials
For me, residing near grocery stores was an essential criterion. Well-known supermarket chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op are widely accessible, while cost-effective choices like Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland cater to students aiming to economize. Being close to vital stores, including pharmacies, is particularly beneficial during hectic times like exam periods.
### Selecting the Right Neighborhood
Choosing a neighborhood in London can be a daunting task given the city’s remarkable diversity. London’s ethnic communities are fundamental to its cultural richness, offering distinctive experiences across different regions. Numerous international students gravitate toward neighborhoods that mirror the familiarity of their home nations.
For example, Southall in West London is renowned for its large South Asian population, featuring Indian eateries, grocery stores, and traditional apparel shops. Brixton, situated in South London, is famed for its Afro-Caribbean heritage and lively music atmosphere. Meanwhile, Chinatown in the West End is a bustling hub filled with Chinese dining establishments, shops, and cultural events. These areas are merely a few examples of the cultural enclaves that render London so unique.
### Embracing London’s Diversity
The ideal area to reside in London ultimately hinges on your individual interests and requirements. Whether you are attracted to the city’s cultural enclaves, its convenience, or its vibrant social atmosphere, London has something for everyone. As you search for a new residence in this extraordinary city, take the opportunity to explore its diverse housing options, immerse yourself in its rich cultural diversity, and relish the thrill of living in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
