**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new environment felt quite intimidating. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful moments. But what insights have I gained from this experience, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of my university journey was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may feel similarly. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently affirm that I’ve fostered some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These connections didn’t develop instantly, but they began with small actions—like striking up casual conversations with individuals experiencing the same situation as me. Over time, these exchanges matured into significant bonds. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with taking that first step.

So, what did I discover? First, it’s crucial to take a leap early on, even if it makes you uncomfortable. If you’re not prepared right away, no need to fret—numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people will come your way. Secondly, the best approach is to be yourself. With such a diverse range of personalities and backgrounds in university, you’re bound to find those who resonate with your own.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more significant. It’s simple to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when witnessing others studying and apparently excelling.

What supported me during these moments of uncertainty was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely that others are, too. The secret is to ask for assistance. This may be the most essential lesson I learned in my first year. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your peers or the teaching staff—they are there to aid your success.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors truly want students to excel, and they recognize the challenges we confront. They maintain open lines of communication and consistently check in with us throughout the academic year.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the significant steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it proved to be a fulfilling endeavor. It enabled me to build connections with staff members, which were invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unfounded. With ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.

Beginning university is a major step, but it also presents an opportunity for growth, connection, and self-discovery. If you are about to embark on your own journey, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Embrace the challenges, seek help when needed, and remember to enjoy the journey.
