**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has been naturally timid and withdrawn, plunging into a new and uncharted environment felt daunting. Now, as I contemplate the previous academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, hurdles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

Making new friends was one of the most daunting parts of beginning university. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day at student housing, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve met here have become like a second family to me, and it all began with simple conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.

What have I gleaned from this experience? Taking that first step is essential. Even if it doesn’t feel like the right moment, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, remain authentic to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subject material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even sharper. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you witness others studying and appearing to have everything under control.

What aided me in this transition was the recognition that everyone is facing similar hurdles. If a concept is unclear to you, it’s likely others are struggling as well. The important thing is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to seek help is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Faculty

In relation to support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about student success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to tackle our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. Taking the initiative to become a year well-being representative was one of the steps I took early on, and it transformed into a gratifying experience. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable.

For anyone stepping into university life, my advice is to make the most of the resources and support systems that are available. Whether seeking academic assistance or pastoral care, there’s no such thing as too much help.

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both before and during my time at university—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by staff and peers, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve also discovered how to balance the demands of examinations and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and excitement.

In summary, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has highlighted the significance of stepping beyond my comfort zone, asking for help when necessary, and seizing the opportunities that arise.
