**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path that lay before me. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into such a fresh and demanding environment felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I can recognize how much I’ve matured, the obstacles I’ve navigated, and the enjoyment I’ve experienced along the way. But what specific lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
### Building Friendships: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Experience
One of the most anxiety-inducing parts of starting university was the process of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary worries as well. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before the semester officially started. I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations and bonding with those who were experiencing the same feelings.
So, what have I taken away from this? I discovered that taking that first step is always beneficial. Even if you may feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be countless ice-breaker activities and ways to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that being true to yourself is the best approach. With an array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and the adjustment from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic environment can easily shake your self-assurance. You may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something isn’t clicking, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it as well. The most crucial lesson I grasped in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from peers or faculty, do not hesitate to ask for help when you find yourself at an impasse.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
This leads me to my next observation—the faculty within the Materials department are remarkable. They truly desire for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support that was available until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to connect more deeply with the faculty, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit. My primary takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the resources available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was largely misplaced. With the extensive support from both staff and classmates, I understood that I was never isolated. I also learned how to enjoy life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I move forward, I feel increasingly confident and equipped for the upcoming challenges, knowing I possess the tools and support to excel.
