**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt about the future. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), and the prospect of entering this new phase seemed intimidating for someone like me, who has always been a bit introverted. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a period filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current position?

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it’s likely causing you some concern as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester officially started, I hid in my room the entire day, too frightened to go out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at Imperial, especially within my course. All it took was a little conversation with others in similar situations.

So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that taking that first leap is always rewarding. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be plenty of ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections. Most importantly, I discovered that the best thing you can do is to be your authentic self. With the diverse range of people across the university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more evident. Being placed in such a setting can shake your self-assurance, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely others are too. The crucial takeaway? Seek assistance. This is perhaps the most vital lesson I absorbed in my first year—don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty.

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They sincerely aim for your success and recognize the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care available until late in the year, but looking back, I wish I had engaged sooner. At the year’s outset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position helped me connect with the staff better, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to cultivate relationships with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your well-being. My recommendation? Make the most of the assistance available—you can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly misplaced. With the broad spectrum of support available from both faculty and fellow students, help is always at hand when needed. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to enjoy university life while balancing the inevitable pressures of examinations and deadlines.
