**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was a new experience for me. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the process of making friends. For many incoming students, this is likely a major worry, and it certainly applied to me. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to my peers.
Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These relationships have become akin to a second family for me, across my course and the entire university. What changed? It began with taking small steps—starting light conversations with others who shared my apprehensions.
What did I glean from this experience? Embracing that initial leap of faith is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease right from the start, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university presented a stark difference, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more significant. It’s easy to feel engulfed or question your abilities when you observe others studying diligently and wonder if you’re measuring up.
What aided me during these moments of insecurity was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was quite likely that others were facing the same challenge. The key message here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or academic staff, asking for help is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
Speaking of staff, I must highlight how remarkable the Materials department faculty are. They sincerely wish for students to flourish and are acutely aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and demonstrated compassion towards our difficulties.
While I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity facilitated connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My counsel? Fully leverage the support and resources available—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Important Takeaways from My First Year
Looking back, this year has imparted numerous lessons. Those feelings of anxiety I harbored, both prior to commencing university and throughout the year, were mostly unwarranted. With the vast support provided by staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone.
Most importantly, I came to understand how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. University is a time for personal growth, and while challenges are unavoidable, they also present opportunities to learn and excel.
As I gear up for the next chapter of my journey, I am thankful for the experiences and insights of my first year. To anyone about to embark on their own university journey: take the plunge, seek assistance, and believe that you’ll discover your place.
