**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, stepping into the unknown was quite unfamiliar to me. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and cherished memories, I understand just how life-changing this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the most daunting aspects of starting university was the task of making new friends. If you are a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern you can relate to. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day retreating into my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

These bonds didn’t materialize instantly, but began with simple steps—like engaging in light conversation with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. Gradually, these connections blossomed into a second family for me at Imperial. What did I take away from this? Take that bold step early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared or comfortable at first, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, just be yourself. Given the diverse community at Imperial, you will surely find individuals who share your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Challenges

Another major challenge was adapting to the course’s demands and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty understanding a topic, it’s likely that your classmates are as well. The crucial takeaway is to seek help—whether from fellow students or faculty members. This is perhaps the most significant lesson I learned during my first year: don’t shy away from asking for assistance.

### Fostering Relationships with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication regarding any issues we were facing.

I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, and I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early in the year, I chose to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I wholeheartedly recommend seizing these chances. My greatest lesson? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and support available—you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting back, this year has reminded me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly solitary. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.

University is a journey of personal development, and while it may seem intimidating at first, it’s also a chance to uncover your strengths, build enduring friendships, and take on new challenges.
