**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with trepidation, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was quite overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year characterized by personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was the task of making friends. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern, myself included. On my first day at student housing, I spent several hours retreating to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

These connections didn’t materialize overnight; they began with small interactions—like engaging in light conversation with others who were equally new to this experience. Over time, these relationships evolved into a second family here at Imperial.

So, what’s the takeaway? The secret is to take that initial leap of faith early on. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adjusting to the academic demands and level of difficulty was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university-level material was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt particularly tough. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others who appear to be managing their studies effortlessly.

What assisted me in navigating this transition was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone else was experiencing similar challenges, and if I struggled with something, it
