**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt quite overwhelming. Now, as I look back on my first year, I recognize a phase brimming with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the prospect of meeting new people. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern on your mind as well. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.

The pivotal factor was taking that initial step—initiating small conversations with fellow newcomers who shared my feelings. As time passed, these exchanges evolved into significant friendships, and I now view my friends at Imperial as my second family. What lesson did I take away from this experience? Firstly, it’s beneficial to step out of your comfort zone early on. If you don’t feel ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Secondly, always remain true to yourself. In such a diverse university setting, you are certain to find individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others’ studying and achievements.

I found that realizing I was not in this alone was instrumental in managing this transition. Everyone was encountering similar challenges, and if I struggled to grasp something, it was likely others were too. The most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty members, reaching out for help can be transformative.

### The Significance of Community and Support
Regarding the staff, I cannot express enough how exceptional the Materials department team is. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, responding to our worries and offering support.

Even though I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support system until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Stepping into the role of a year wellbeing representative at the beginning of the year was a significant leap, and it proved to be extremely rewarding. It enabled me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most important takeaway? Make the most of the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!

### Major Takeaways from My First Year
Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout my time here—was largely unnecessary. With the extensive range of support options available from faculty and fellow students, I learned that I was never truly alone. Most importantly, I discovered how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while still savoring joyful moments.

As I look ahead, I feel thankful for the growth I have undergone and the relationships I have built. To anyone about to embark on their university journey, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious, but trust that you will find your path—and your community—just as I have.
