**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar concerns. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the semester officially began, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like an extended family.

How did I achieve this? It began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing the same situation as me. The essential lesson I learned is to take that leap at the start of the year. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to meet new faces. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied student body within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another obstacle I faced was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you see others studying and wonder if you’re measuring up.

What aided me during these challenging moments was coming to the realization that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most valuable lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help—be it from peers or faculty.

### The Supportive Faculty in Materials
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. They truly care about the success of their students and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept the lines of communication open and addressed our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the support systems until the end of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took initially, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved extremely valuable. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There is a vast array of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you navigate the hurdles. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that balancing the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment is indeed possible.

As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the growth, friendships, and experiences that have molded me during my first year. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university journey, know that it’s entirely normal to feel anxious—but also know that you will find your path, just as I did.
