**Reflecting on My Initial Year at Imperial College London**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new experience felt particularly intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize a phase of significant personal development, obstacles, and, above all, enjoyment. But what exactly have I learned, and where do I currently find myself?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. For a lot of prospective students, this is among the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and I was no exception. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all initiated with a handful of casual conversations with others who were feeling just as I was.
So, what did I take away from this experience? I realized that it’s always worthwhile to take that first step. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breakers and events tailored to help you engage with others. Most importantly, I found out that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Managing the Academic Load
Another major challenge was acclimating to the intensity of the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more striking. Being thrust into this demanding setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when observing peers studying and feeling like you’re lagging behind. Yet, here’s the reality: everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If something seems unclear, it’s likely that others are facing the same difficulties.
The most crucial lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from your classmates or teaching staff, don’t hold back from reaching out. This simple gesture can significantly ease the navigation of academic challenges in university life.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, I cannot stress enough the encouragement provided by the Materials department. The faculty and tutors sincerely wish for your success, and they comprehend the challenges students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year, addressing our worries and providing direction.
While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had started earlier. Early in the year, I took a step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are many opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to leverage the support that is accessible to you. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Closing Thoughts
In conclusion, this year has illuminated the fact that the anxiety I felt prior to commencing university—and even during the academic year—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive options for support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned how to balance the stress of examinations and deadlines with enjoyment, and I’ve matured in ways I never anticipated.
