**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I perceive it as a time of significant personal development, numerous challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments. But what precisely did I discover, and what is my current position?

### Forming Connections: The Initial Major Hurdle

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably something that concerns you as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room, too frightened to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I have developed some of the most cherished friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of it initiated through casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.

So, what insight did I gain? I came to understand that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not yet feeling ready or at ease, fret not—there will be ample ice-breaker activities and chances to engage with others. Above all, be genuine. With such a rich diversity of individuals across the program and the university, you’re bound to connect with those who align with you.

### Confronting the Workload and Academic Obstacles

Another crucial challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the subject matter. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even more pronounced leap between the first and second terms. Being immersed in such an environment can undermine your confidence, especially as you observe others studying and feel as if you are lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, there’s a good chance others are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—this is arguably the most vital lesson I took away from my first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates or faculty for help.

### The Value of Support from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for your success and are mindful of the challenges students encounter. They uphold open lines of communication throughout the academic year, addressing any concerns we may have. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier.

At the year’s outset, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to build rapport with the faculty, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I strongly encourage doing so. My primary takeaway from this experience is to utilize the support that is available to you. You can never receive too much aid!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely unjustified. Numerous support systems are established, from faculty to fellow students, ensuring that you’re never genuinely alone. I’ve acquired the ability to balance the stress of exams and deadlines while savoring my time here, and I have evolved in ways I never anticipated.
