**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been shy and introverted, immersing myself in university life felt intimidating. Now, as I reflect, I recognize a year that has been filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what exactly have I learned this year, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most nerve-wracking challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share this concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to venture outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I could have hoped for. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, all beginning with casual conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what insight have I gained? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals within the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another challenge I needed to overcome was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second proved even trickier. It’s simple to feel inadequate when observing others studying, but it’s vital to remember that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, chances are others are grappling with it as well.
The crucial lesson here? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. This may be the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or faculty, requesting support is essential.
### Significance of Interacting with Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely want you to thrive and recognize the hurdles students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept in steady communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing support. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until year-end, and I wish I had utilized it earlier.
At the year’s beginning, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway? Seize the opportunities for help and support available—you can never have too much!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support accessible from both staff and fellow students, those anxious feelings can be diminished. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and have found out how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.
