**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was set to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reticent, diving into new experiences was not something I was accustomed to. Reflecting back now, I realize that this past academic year has been a period of significant personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

### Forming Connections: Surmounting the Initial Major Challenge

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it may be a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and say hello to anyone else. Fast forwarding to the present, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both within my course and throughout the university. It turns out all it required was a little small talk with fellow students who were experiencing the same feelings.

So, what insight did I gain? I learned that taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you are certain to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Managing the Workload: A Transition from A-Levels

Another major challenge involved adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant increase in expectations compared to A-levels, and an even more substantial transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this new academic setting can sometimes lead to self-doubt, especially when you see others studying diligently and feel like you’re falling short.

What assisted me in navigating this was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself puzzled about a topic, it’s likely that others are equally perplexed. The most vital lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of reaching out for help. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, asking for assistance is essential.

### Assistance from the Faculty: Don’t Hesitate to Seek Support

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the Materials department is. The staff genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties that students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication with us, addressing our issues and providing support. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier.

At the year’s onset, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position offered me the opportunity to connect with the staff, which ended up being tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to foster relationships with the faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway is to capitalize on the support accessible to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience

In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt leading up to and during university was largely unwarranted. With the abundant support available from both staff and fellow students, those emotions can be addressed. I have discovered that I am never alone in my difficulties, and I have learned how to balance having fun with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
