**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar was not a familiar situation for me. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with development, hurdles, and memorable experiences, I can appreciate the profound impact this journey has had on me. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was the prospect of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your principal concerns as well. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly proclaim that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life—relationships that feel akin to a second family.
What led me to this point? It began with small conversations and connecting with others who shared my uncertainties. I discovered that taking risks early in the year is essential. If you’re not immediately ready or comfortable, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaking events and avenues to meet individuals. Most significantly, I learned that authenticity is the best policy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic demands and complexity of the material was yet another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become disheartened or question your capabilities when observing others diligently studying and fearing you’re lagging behind.
What carried me through those times was the realization that we are all in similar situations. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely others are struggling too. The crucial lesson is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Mastering the art of asking for help is perhaps the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Regarding faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. They facilitate open dialogues with us throughout the year and are consistently willing to provide help.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, and I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made the move to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which became incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary lesson? Utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I look back, this year has imparted to me that the apprehension I experienced before and during the start of university was often unfounded. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and enjoyment.
To anyone preparing to commence their university path: welcome the challenges, take those bold steps, and keep in mind that help is always close at hand.
