**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Almost ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was preparing to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something I relished. Reflecting back now, I recognize a year filled with development, obstacles, and abundant happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Confronting the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most challenging elements of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you are a future student reading this, it’s probably a concern on your mind as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent a whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships I’ve ever had.
The breakthrough came when I compelled myself to engage in small talk with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, these conversations evolved into friendships that resemble a second family. My most significant lesson? Embrace the leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, there will be many icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Confronting the Academic Shift
Adapting to the level of workload and complexity of university material was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was quite marked, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It can be overwhelming to see others studying and thriving and begin to doubt your own capabilities.
What supported me through this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re finding something confusing, it’s likely that others are as well. The crucial point is to seek help—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This is perhaps the most important lesson I took away from my first year: don’t fear reaching out for assistance.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to flourish and are sympathetic to the difficulties we encounter. Over the course of the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to listen to our concerns.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or casual conversations, connecting with the faculty is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My recommendation? Maximize the support and resources at your disposal—you cannot have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the abundance of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and self-exploration.
As I progress forward, I am thankful for the challenges and personal development I’ve undergone. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university journey: embrace the anxiety, take the plunge, and believe that you will navigate your path.
