**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I prepared to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. The idea of venturing into the unfamiliar was intimidating for someone like me, who has always been rather shy and introverted. Looking back now, I recognize a year that was not only demanding but also life-changing, filled with personal development, academic challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most frightening elements of starting university was the prospect of forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this may be one of your primary apprehensions as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The secret? Taking that initial step. Be it sparking small conversations or participating in social events, these experiences can pave the way for significant connections. If you aren’t quite prepared at the start, don’t fret—there will be countless chances to connect with others throughout the year. The most crucial lesson I gleaned is to simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Adapting to the academic rigors of university was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university studies was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to experience being overwhelmed or to question your capabilities when observing others appearing to thrive.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone is confronting similar challenges. If you find yourself grappling with a topic, it’s quite likely that others are experiencing the same difficulty. The best course of action is to seek assistance—be it from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to ask for help early on has been one of the most valuable takeaways from my first year.
### Fostering Connections with Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open communication channels and offered resources to help us navigate any difficulties we faced.
I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One significant step I took was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through official roles or informal encounters, familiarizing yourself with your professors and support staff can significantly impact your experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to starting university and during the year—were largely unfounded. With the backing of friends, faculty, and the wider university community, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and leisure.
This year has been a journey of evolution, and I’m thankful for the trials and opportunities it has presented. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember to take that leap, seek assistance when necessary, and approach the experience with an open heart and mind.
