### Reflecting on My Initial Year as a Materials Science and Engineering Student
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was certainly outside my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can clearly see all that I’ve learned and how much I’ve evolved.
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings—it’s entirely natural. On my first day in student accommodation, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever had.
The key was taking that initial step. It began with casual conversation with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these interactions grew into meaningful connections, and I now consider my friends here at Imperial to be my second family. My advice? Be authentic. With such a varied community of students, you’re sure to encounter individuals who have similar interests and values. And if you’re not prepared to jump in right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others.
#### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the increase in difficulty from A-levels. The transition was particularly tough when moving from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities, especially when observing others around you seemingly thriving.
What assisted me most was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The most important thing you can do is seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.
#### Assistance from Staff and Pastoral Care
Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are exceptionally supportive. They are genuinely committed to student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and actively listened to our concerns.
Although I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support offered until the close of the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One step I did take early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This experience allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance.
#### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were unwarranted. There is a plethora of support available, from faculty to fellow students, and you are never truly alone in facing challenges. Most importantly, I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
This year has been a significant journey of personal development, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead. To anyone preparing to embark on their university experience: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t forget to savor the journey.
