**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and unpredictability about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, the prospect of fully engaging with university life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what lessons have I taken from this year, and what is my current position?
### Forming Friendships: A Challenging Yet Fulfilling Endeavor
One of the most anxiety-inducing tasks I encountered at the outset was the quest to make friends. This worry is common among many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day of moving into my new place, just days before the semester officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. However, reflecting upon my experience now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time here. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with a few brief conversations with peers who were feeling just as uncertain as I was.
So, what have I gained from this? I realized that making an effort at the beginning of the year is invariably valuable. If you’re hesitant or uncomfortable, don’t stress—numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others will present themselves. Most critically, just be yourself. With such a diverse population at the university, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Workload and Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the heavy workload and the academic rigors. The transition from A-levels was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. Being immersed in such a setting can occasionally undermine your self-assurance, particularly when witnessing others studying diligently and feeling as if you fall short. However, I found reassurance in the fact that everyone else is encountering similar struggles. If something is perplexing to you, chances are there are others grappling with the same concepts.
The most crucial insight from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, don’t hold back from asking for help. Everyone is committed to your success, and cultivating the ability to ask for support is essential early on.
### Assistance from Faculty: A Crucial Asset
On the topic of support, the team in the Materials Science department is exceptional. They sincerely care about your success and recognize the challenges students face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing direction. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not having taken advantage of it earlier.
At the semester’s onset, I took a step by volunteering as a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to connect more closely with the staff, which proved to be invaluable. Building relationships with faculty members can be incredibly beneficial, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your personal growth. My major takeaway from this experience is to capitalize on the support accessible to you—you can never have an excess of help!
### Concluding Thoughts: Conquering Anxiety and Welcoming University Life
In summary, this year has imparted to me that the anxieties I experienced before and throughout university were largely unwarranted. With the extensive array of support systems provided by both faculty and fellow students, help is always within reach when needed. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to relish my time even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
