**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been on the quieter side, jumping into such a major life change felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful experiences. But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?
### Taking the Plunge: Forming Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. Starting university can be quite daunting, and for future students reading this, it’s probably one of your top worries. On my first day in the student residence, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent all day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve found some of the closest friends I’ve ever known. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who share my journey and have my back. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating small talks with others who were equally apprehensive.
What lesson did I glean? Firstly, taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, fret not—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Secondly, the most beneficial approach is to simply be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’ll undoubtedly meet individuals who resonate with you.
### Confronting Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was a marked leap, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What helped me navigate these challenging times was reminding myself that everyone else is in the same situation. If you’re having difficulties grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or professors. This became the most vital lesson I learned during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department are nothing short of amazing. They genuinely care about the success of their students and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering advice.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I wish I had availed myself of it sooner. Early in the year, I made the bold choice to become a well-being representative, which enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members. This ultimately proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway is to utilize the help and resources available to you—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced before and during my university journey was often unwarranted. With the wide array of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has equipped me with the skills to manage exam stress and deadlines while still cherishing moments of joy and self-discovery.
To anyone gearing up for university, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also understand that you’re entering a space brimming with opportunities for support, friendship, and growth. Take that plunge, be authentic, and welcome the journey ahead.
