**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Overcoming the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was the challenge of making friends. This concern weighs heavily on many prospective students, and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, just prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the most significant friendships in my life.

I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with small chats with others in similar situations. The essential lesson I took from this? Take the plunge. Even when you don’t feel prepared, there will be countless icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. And above all, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university studies was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It can be easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achievers.

What aided me immensely was the reminder that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that my peers were facing difficulties too. The most crucial lesson I learned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether reaching out to classmates or teaching staff, don’t hesitate to ask for help—doing so can be transformative.

### The Encouraging Materials Department
On the topic of staff, I must highlight how supportive the Materials Science department is. The lecturers and tutors genuinely aim for students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are always eager to offer assistance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. Early on, I decided to step up and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know the staff is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My key takeaway? Make use of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on my first year, I recognize that the anxiety I felt—both before and during university—was often unfounded. With a plethora of support options from staff and fellow students, there is always someone available to assist. This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone and it’s feasible to enjoy the experience while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Looking ahead, I am thankful for the personal growth, friendships, and experiences that have shaped me throughout the past year. For anyone about to embark on their own university journey, my message is straightforward: take the leap, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help.
