**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was anxious, fearful, and doubtful as I got ready to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been introverted and private, plunging into this new experience was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in growth, obstacles, and enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may share this same worry. On my first day in the student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the day staying in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve interacted with here—both in my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family. It all initiated with light conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what did I discover? Take initiative early on. If you’re not prepared or at ease right from the start, don’t fret—there are many icebreaker activities and chances to help you connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adjusting to the demands and complexity of university-level material was another significant challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overpowered or question your capabilities, especially when you see others studying and presume they have everything under control.

What assisted me in overcoming those moments was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or academic staff. Learning to ask for help might be the most critical skill you develop in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is remarkable. The instructors and mentors genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. They keep the lines of communication open throughout the year, addressing any concerns we bring forward.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had acted on it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive choices I made at the outset, and it turned out to be a brilliant decision. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which have been incredibly rewarding. Whether through formal engagements or informal chats, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit. Utilize the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was unwarranted. There is abundant support available from both staff and fellow students to assist you through any challenges. I’ve discovered that I am never truly alone, and that university life can be enjoyable even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.

This year has been one of considerable personal development, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my journey in Materials Science and Engineering.
