**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I see it filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments. But what lessons did I take away from this experience, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the quest for friendship. If you’re an incoming student perusing this, you might have the same concern. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.

The secret? Taking that first leap of faith. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease immediately, don’t fret—there will be a multitude of icebreakers and social events meant to facilitate connections. I also discovered that being your authentic self is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find those who reflect your interests and principles.

### Facing the Academic Trials

Another challenge I encountered was adjusting to the academic workload and the increased complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when observing others study and wonder if you measure up.

What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The most significant lesson I gleaned during my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from fellow students or academic staff, reaching out for assistance can be immensely beneficial.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are remarkable. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and show great empathy towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered continual support.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. At the start of the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to forge relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest takeaway is to utilize the resources and support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much support!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during my university experience—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I realized I was never truly isolated. I also learned how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Upon reflection, my first year was a transformative journey. It was a year of personal growth, connection, and learning, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I continue my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
