**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained this year, and how do I feel about my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is a common concern about beginning university, and it was no different for me. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent an entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve made some of the most wonderful friends of my life. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. It merely took stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings.

What did I discover? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you don’t feel ready or at ease immediately, don’t panic—there are numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities to engage with others. Most importantly, I understood that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse crowd at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was adjusting to the workload and the complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more overwhelming. It wasn’t always simple to keep my confidence intact in such a rigorous environment, particularly when it appeared as though others were managing everything with ease.

What assisted me through this was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are struggling as well. The most beneficial step you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or the teaching staff. Learning how to ask for support is arguably the most critical skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Staff
Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Over the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and addressed our issues.

I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of the proactive steps I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway is to exploit the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve recognized that the anxiety I experienced—both before university began and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There are so many support structures in place, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate through challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated and that harmonizing enjoyment with the demands of exams and deadlines is achievable.

This year has been a transformative experience, and I’m eager to see what the future brings as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
