**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my path as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, stepping into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I find myself contemplating the insights I gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Navigating the Challenge of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting facets of commencing university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might have similar concerns. I certainly did. On the initial day at student accommodations, just days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the whole day concealing myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. My fellow students and colleagues at Imperial have become akin to a second family for me. It all initiated with casual conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that taking a bold step at the year’s outset is worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreakers and events crafted to help you meet new people. Most crucially, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Workload
Adapting to the academic challenges of university was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university-level material was distinct, and the transition from the first to the second term felt particularly tough. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by accomplished peers.
What aided me in navigating these sentiments was recognizing that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, it’s likely that others are as well. The best action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to pursue help is likely the most valuable skill I picked up during my first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Regarding support, the personnel in the Materials Science and Engineering department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and responded to our concerns.
I did not fully utilize the pastoral care available until the latter part of the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. One of the initiatives I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly impact your university journey. My principal message here is straightforward: make the most of the support accessible to you. You can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting back, this year has revealed that the apprehension I felt—both before and throughout university—was frequently unwarranted. There is a plethora of support available from faculty and fellow students, and I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned to juggle the pressures of examinations and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.
Beginning university might feel like stepping into the unknown, but with the right attitude and a readiness to embrace fresh experiences, it can also be a period of tremendous growth and enlightenment.
